Improving performance with AI-driven PSM practices
Based on interviews with procurement professionals, a recent study sought to identify real-world use cases of the current applications of AI in Purchasing and Supply Management (PSM) and predict how AI can drive performance improvement through integration into specific PSM practices in the time to come.
In current-use cases, the authors found more generic use and impacts of AI in PSM, like improved efficiency, reduced manual work, cost savings, and enhanced decision-making, which suggests that managers still perceive AI as a tool for supporting operational tasks and improving efficiency. In future-use cases, researchers expect AI to have broader performance advantages such as value creation, business growth and damage prevention instead of just operational performance improvements. Therefore, the authors predict that with increased AI integration in the time to come, there will be a marked shift from operational performance impacts of AI to its strategic performance advantages including enhancing information flow and decision-making shift from operational performance impacts of AI to its strategic performance advantages including enhancing information flow and decision-making.

Adapting ProcurCompEU for Innovation in Healthcare Procurement: A Competency Framework Approach
Researchers explored how the ProcurCompEU Competency Framework can be adapted to support innovation in healthcare procurement. The framework required specific adaptations that go beyond traditional cost-efficiency models to effectively address the unique demands of healthcare procurement. Some of the most crucial key competencies are outlined as follows:
• Needs assessment: Accurate needs assessment can bridge the gap between procurement strategies and healthcare requirements. This competence supports evidence-based decision-making which allows procurement professionals to address fundamental challenges within healthcare procurement.
• Market analysis: Understanding market dynamics is crucial for fostering supplier diversity and creating opportunities for co-creation. This competence ensures that professionals can navigate the highly fragmented healthcare market.
• Contract management: Postaward contract management ensures that innovative solutions deliver the promised value. This competence aligns with the need for long-term value creation.
• Technical specifications: Functional and performance-based specifications foster supplier creativity and ensure alignment with healthcare innovation goals. This competence avoids overly prescriptive requirements that could stifle innovation.
